The 5 Summer Skin Tips Everyone Should Know

Summer is definitely one of the best seasons of all. It's the time when you get to hang out with your friends and family. Whether you're having backyard barbecues, camping in the mountains or playing a round of Marco Polo in the pool, many of the things that make summer fun can really take a toll on our skin, but don't sweat it! Here are some cool tips to help you let your natural beauty shine.

  1. Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen!

We can't say it enough -- wear sunscreen! According to the American Cancer Society, skin cancer diagnoses equal more than the new diagnoses of breast, prostate, lung and colon cancers combined, and it's estimated that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer. Luckily, skin cancer is preventable. Avoid tanning. If you must have that sun-kissed look, opt for a spray tan instead. Other than that, make sure you wear protective clothing and a sunscreen with an SPF of 30. If you intend to spend a lot of time in the sun, reapply your sunscreen every 90 minutes to ensure you're protected throughout the day.

  2. Wash your face at night.

Don't go to sleep with your makeup on. Throughout the day, you're exposed to free radicals in the environment, which cling to your makeup and can cause healthy collagen to breakdown, resulting in fine lines. Try keeping makeup remover towelettes by your bed for those nights, where you feel to tired to wash your face.

  3. Skip your morning cleanser.

Cleansing too frequently or abrasively can strip away your skin's natural oils, ceramides and natural moisturizing factors, which are substances that retain water from inside the body. Without them, your skin not only becomes dry, but it slows down the cell turnover process, leaving skin looking dull. Instead of washing your face in the morning, try just splashing your face with some water and apply a light moisturizer with an SPF of 15 or higher. Try Aveda's Inner LightTM Mineral Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 15.

  4. Beauty starts from the inside out.

Drink plenty of water to keep the body hydrated from the inside out. Eat fruits and veggies rich in vitamin A, C and E. Your skin needs vitamin A to protect itself from the sun. Vitamin C creates collagen and wards off wrinkles, while vitamin E moisturizes and smooths skin.
